Saddle height and knee angle: how to get it right

Saddle height is the most important number on your bike. Get it right and you unlock power, comfort, and a knee that lasts; get it wrong by even a centimetre and you invite overextension, hip rocking, and pain. The good news: there's a reliable way to set it, and it's based on knee angle, not a formula.

Why inseam formulas aren't enough

You've probably seen the classic rules: 109% of inseam (the Hamley method), or the LeMond formula (inseam × 0.883). They're fine as a starting point, but studies comparing them against the gold-standard knee-angle criterion have found they frequently put riders outside the ideal range — the 109% method has been shown to miss it a large fraction of the time. The reason is simple: two riders with the same inseam can have very different thigh-to-shin ratios, foot length, and cleat setup. A formula can't see any of that. A knee angle can.

The knee-angle method

The approach professional fitters use (often called the Holmes method) measures the angle at the back of your knee when the pedal is at the very bottom of the stroke — the knee extension angle. Traditionally this is stated as 25–35° of flexion from straight, measured statically with a goniometer.

There's an important nuance most guides skip: pedaling changes the number. Under real dynamic load your knee flexes roughly 8° more than in a static hold. So when you're measuring from a video of yourself actually riding, the useful target for the interior knee angle at the bottom of the stroke works out to roughly 140–148° (where a perfectly straight leg is 180°). This is the window a good video analyzer checks against.

Two conventions, one idea. “25–35° of flexion” and “≈140–148° interior angle” describe the same knee — one measures the bend, the other the opening. Don't let the numbers confuse you.

How much is a degree worth?

Roughly, moving the saddle a few millimetres changes the bottom-of-stroke knee angle by about a degree — but the exact relationship depends on your leg length, which is why calibrated tools (using your crank length as a ruler) can convert “you're 5° over” into a specific millimetre change rather than a vague “lower it a bit.” Whatever the tool, move in small steps and re-check: overshooting is the classic error.

A note on cadence and power

Because dynamic knee flexion depends on how hard you're pedaling — it deepens under load and shallows again at very high power — measure at a steady, moderate effort around 75–95 rpm. Filming a lazy soft-pedal or an all-out sprint will both give you a misleading angle.

Then, and only then, the rest

Saddle height comes first for a reason: it changes almost every other angle on the bike. Once it's in the window, move on to saddle fore-aft, then your reach and bar height.
