How accurate is an AI bike fit compared to a professional fit?

“Is an AI bike fit actually accurate, or is it a toy?” is the right question to ask before you trust one with your position. The honest answer: for the core of a fit, video-based measurement is genuinely good — closer to a professional studio fit than most people expect — but it has real limits, and any tool that won't tell you where those limits are should be treated with suspicion.
What it measures well
The heart of a bike fit is dynamic joint angles: knee, hip, back, and elbow, measured while you pedal. Modern pose-estimation models track these from ordinary video without any markers, and research comparing markerless camera measurement against marker-based motion capture has found knee-angle agreement within a couple of degrees. Studies also report that static, dynamic-2D, and dynamic-3D methods have broadly similar reliability for the measurements that drive saddle height and reach. In plain terms: for setting saddle height, fore-aft, and reach, a good video fit lands in the same window a fitter would put you in — which is why one well-known AI tool has been reviewed as producing recommendations nearly identical to an in-person 2D-motion-capture fit, at a fraction of the cost.
What tightens the accuracy
- A square, level camera. Off-axis filming is the biggest error source in any video fit. Tools that detect camera skew (for example, by checking whether your pedal path traces a circle or an ellipse) are measuring more honestly than those that don't.
- A length reference. Using your crank length as a known ruler lets the software convert angles into real millimetres — the difference between “lower it a bit” and “lower it 6mm.”
- Multiple pedal strokes. Averaging angles across a whole clip, rather than a single frame, removes a lot of noise.
What it honestly can't do
A single side-view camera sees you in one plane. That means it cannot assess:
- Cleat and foot alignment — a front-plane, hands-on issue.
- Leg-length discrepancy and how it should be shimmed.
- Lateral knee tracking — whether your knee wanders in or out.
- Saddle pressure and soft-tissue comfort, which pro studios map with sensors.
These aren't small caveats — they're exactly the things that matter most for riders with a persistent injury, an unusual anatomy, or a very aggressive target position. A good AI tool should say so plainly rather than imply it does everything.
